The main objective of this project is harmonizing the medical faculties' curricula with EU medical education standards in cooperation with internal and external stakeholders, as an inevitable part of Bologna implementation.


Specific Objectives of the Project:
1. Inventory of available knowledge and competencies of medical faculty's graduates.
2. Introducing procedures for testing of achieved undergraduate medical education learning
outcomes in cooperation with intenal and external stakeholders.
3. Establishing a Resonance Committee on medical education (with Public Affairs Office, Alumni
Service and the Curriculum committee and its tasks).
4. Creating an interuniversity pilot advanced medical training center to stimulate the introduction
of market oriented approach in medical education process of reform.
5. Reform of more competence based curricula
6. Dissemination of the project results.


Project Summary:
BiH formally joined the Bologna Process in 2003. It is well known that quality assurance is a central element of the Bologna Declaration. Common standards for quality control and accreditation still do not exist at the national level in BiH, but nevertheless each of the five medical faculties in BiH is doing a lot of efforts to set up a quality assurance and quality control system. All this has the final aim to stimulate the inegration of BiH medical faculties in the European Higher Education Area. The European University Association (EUA) undertook an institutional evaluation of seven universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the academic year 2003-2004, according to the standard EUA methodology. The need for improvement of mechanisms for structured exchange and dialogue between the university and its societal partners was one of the main outcomes. Therefore was set up this Tempus proposal: "THE ROLE OF STAKEHOLDERS IN QUALITY ASSURANCE PROCEDURES AT BIH MEDICAL FACULTIES". With this proposal all five B&H medical faculties want to include all internal and external stakeholders in educational process of the faculty. It concerns not only staff members and students but also alumni, hospitals, patients and the Ministries of Health as major employers of graduated students.

The consorium appointed KaHo Sint-Lieven (Belgium) as grantholder and Sarajevo University as coordinator. Furthermore, Dublin Institute of Technology (Ireland) ,Vienna Medical University (Austria) and the World University Service Graz (Austria) are the other experienced EU quality management partners. Besides the four other medical faculties of Foča, Tuzla, Banja Luka and Mostar also the Ministries of Health of Sarajevo, Tuzla and the Republika Srpska are full project partners.
Apart from a strong management structure with four planning and evaluation meetings during the full project duration, emphasis will be firstly put on organizing two retraining sessions in institutional self assesment techniques. Both sessions will take place internationally - in Gent and in Vienna and will be followed by a peer training seminar in applied assesment techniques that will be held in Banja Luka. Furthermore a lot of attention will be paid to determining who are exactly the internal and external stakeholders to be consulted. Afterwards will take place the actual stakeholders survey with a lot of attention to processing adaquate survey results. All this will lead to the development of guidelines to improve curriculum development at the medical faculties taking into account the wishes and needs of all internal and external stakeholders. Very important is also the sustainability of project results. Therefore will be established not only an interuniversity competence based pilot training center in Sarajevo but also a Resonance Group Committee office in each BiH medical faculty. This officer will also assure that the results of the stakeholders survey will lead to curricula changes approved by the medical faculty authorities. Regarding dissemination it is worth mentioning that an updated project website will contain all necessary project information. Guidelines to involve all stakeholders with recommendations to improve curricula will be published as one of the main project results. To all interested stakeholders these recommendations will be presented at a two days dissemination conference taking place at the end of the project in Sarajevo. Project partners are also convinced that monitoring and evaluation of project results is essential to reach the originally planned outcomes. Therefore the quality manager of KaHo Sint-Lieven will write each year a project evaluation report.
