IN MEMORIAM – Prof. dr. Nedžad Mulabegović

The University of Sarajevo, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sarajevo, and the Council of the Congress of Bosniac Intellectuals inform the Bosnian-Herzegovinian and academic public of the passing of the esteemed Professor Emeritus Dr. Nedžad Mulabegović, Rector of the University of Sarajevo (1995–2000), Dean of the Faculty of Medicine (1993–2000), and President of the Council of the Congress of Bosniac Intellectuals (2009–2024).

Professor Mulabegović passed away this morning in Sarajevo at the age of 77.

Born in Doboj in 1948, he completed his secondary education in Banja Luka in 1967. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1974 from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sarajevo. He completed postgraduate studies in Experimental Medicine from 1977 to 1979, obtained a Master of Medical Sciences degree in 1981, and earned his PhD in Medical Sciences in 1986.

His academic career began in 1975, progressing from researcher and assistant to associate professor (1991–1995), and full professor from 1996 at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sarajevo.

He made a significant contribution to the academic and civic community through his leadership of the Council of the Congress of Bosniac Intellectuals, serving as its president from 2009 to 2024.

Professor Mulabegović participated in numerous scientific research projects and clinical trials. He authored and co-authored many scientific papers published in indexed journals and wrote dozens of books and textbooks in the field of medical sciences. He mentored fifteen doctoral dissertations and held various roles in scientific institutions. He was a member of the Drug Committee of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina (1986), the New York Academy of Sciences (since 1998), and an Academician of the American Biographical Institute (since 2010). He served as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine (1992–2000) and Rector of the University of Sarajevo (1995–2000).

He was a member of numerous professional associations, including IUPHAR (International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology), editor of Medicinski arhiv, president of the Association of Pharmacologists of Bosnia and Herzegovina, editorial board member of the KCUS Bulletin, member of the European Rectors’ Association, Deputy Director for Europe at the International Biographical Center – Cambridge, Chair of the Drug Commission of the FBiH Ministry of Health, President of the Anti-Doping Commission of the Olympic Committee of BiH, and Editor-in-Chief of the indexed journal Folia Medica. Through his rich academic, scientific, and social contributions, he was the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, including the Plaque of the University of Sarajevo on the occasion of its 40th anniversary, the Charter of the Faculty of Medicine and Clinical Center University of Sarajevo on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the Medal of Karl Franz University, the Charter of the University of Tehran, the Plaque La Sapienza in Rome, the Medal of the Conference of European Rectors (CRE), the Charter of the University of Sarajevo (1949–1999), the International Order of Merit (IBC, Cambridge), the Charter of the Faculty of Engineering in Bihać, the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sarajevo, the title of Most Successful Professor of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sarajevo, the Golden Medal for Bosnia and Herzegovina awarded by ABI USA, and the Charter of the Council of the Congress of Bosniac Intellectuals in 2023.

He spent the entire period of aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo, together with his family.

The memorial for Professor Mulabegović will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the premises of the Rectorate of the University of Sarajevo, jointly organized by the University of Sarajevo, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sarajevo, and the Council of the Congress of Bosniac Intellectuals.
