Faculty of Medicine, University of Sarajevo, Appoints Prof. Dr. Amina Valjevac as Dean for the Term 2026–2030

After the nominated candidates presented their work programs and visions for the Faculty’s development, the Council confirmed its confidence in Prof. Dr. Amini Valjevacby a majority vote, entrusting her with a new mandate at the helm of one of the most significant educational, healthcare, and scientific institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Prof. Dr. Amina Valjevac has served as Dean for the past four years, leading the Faculty of Medicine through the most intensive reform, investment, and academic development cycle in the last decade. Under her leadership, the Faculty achieved notable growth in its own revenues, implemented a comprehensive reform of the medical study program, modernized laboratory capacities, and completed a large number of infrastructure projects.

Professional and Scientific Integrity

Prof. Dr. Amina Valjevac is a Full Professor of Human Physiology, a specialist in internal medicine, and an internationally recognized researcher with extensive academic experience. She has published 85 scientific and professional papers, 11 books and textbooks, and participated in 11 national and international projects, including prestigious COST, Horizon, and SCOPES programs. She is the recipient of the University of Sarajevo Award for Scientific Work (2021).

Her research focuses on bone metabolism, endocrinology, diabetes, obesity, cardiometabolic risks, and neurodegenerative diseases. Her professional engagements in the European Calcified Tissue Society and other international associations contribute to the Faculty’s global recognition.

Achievements of the 2022–2026 Term

During the previous mandate, a series of strategic advancements significantly improved the Faculty’s operations:

  • Growth of own revenues
  • Completion of the largest reform of the medical study program in the past decade
  • Enrollment quota fulfillment of 87–101% and record increase in doctoral program admissions
  • Major investment in laboratory equipment
  • Modernization of classrooms, acquisition of 45 microscopes, renovation of the Institute of Pathology, development of toxicology and molecular laboratories
  • 436 student mobilities and 47 staff mobilities
  • 13 new international agreements, including partnerships with universities in Marburg and Düsseldorf
  • Initiation of study program accreditation and preparation of the first comprehensive self-evaluation reports

These results have significantly strengthened the institution, improved the quality of teaching, research, and diagnostics, and affirmed the Faculty as a key academic center in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Vision and Priorities for the 2026–2030 Term

In her work program for the upcoming mandate, Prof. Dr. Valjevac emphasizes strategic goals that will guide the Faculty toward becoming a modern, internationally recognized, and socially responsible institution:

  • Formal accreditation of the reformed medical study program and IMDP
  • Enhancement of doctoral studies with a stronger focus on research competencies
  • Full operationalization of pathohistological, toxicological, microbiological, and molecular diagnostics
  • Positioning the Faculty as a relevant diagnostic center in Sarajevo Canton
  • Development of advanced e-platforms for teaching, evaluation, and academic services
  • Expansion of innovative digital resources, including the E-Atlas and simulation models
  • Development of CIBS as a regional center for micro-credential programs and specialized education
  • New partnerships, mobilities, and joint study programs
  • Construction of a parking area for faculty members
  • Student HUB and Learning Park
  • Renovation of the Faculty Club and adaptation of the prayer room
  • Aesthetic and functional improvement of outdoor spaces and courtyards
  • Strengthening student services, digital communication, and standards
  • Greater student involvement in academic life and quality processes
  • Strong focus on international projects, grants, and translational research
  • Enhancement of the vivarium as a central research base

These priorities represent a clear continuation of ongoing processes and open a new phase of qualitative development for the Faculty.

The re-election of Prof. Dr. Amina Valjevac reflects the academic community’s clear confidence in her work, competencies, and vision for a modern, stable, and internationally positioned Faculty of Medicine. In the next four years, the focus will be on accreditation, strengthening diagnostic capacities, digital transformation, advancing research, and improving the environment for students and faculty members.
