Institute of Pathology

Established in 1949, the Institute/Department of Pathology integrates diagnostic, educational, and scientific activities in the field of pathology. Its operations are aligned with the vision, mission, and strategic goals of the Faculty of Medicine in achieving high standards of excellence in histopathological diagnostics, education, and scientific research. A long-standing tradition and the expertise of highly qualified specialists—pathologists who also serve as professors and associate professors at the University of Sarajevo—ensure adherence to current diagnostic guidelines and guarantee the quality of histopathological diagnoses.

Within its healthcare services, the Institute performs routine and specialized tissue examinations, including:

- Processing and standard microscopic diagnostics of:

• Small tissue samples obtained via endoscopic procedures
• Needle biopsies
• Surgical specimens and resections

- Specialized services:

• Special histochemical staining of tissue
• Immunohistochemical phenotyping of malignant and non-malignant cells using over 200 specific antibodies/tumor markers
• In situ hybridization (CISH and FISH) for HER2/Neu amplification assessment in breast cancer tissue samples
• Processing and cytological analysis of aspiration, puncture, and exfoliative samples, including preparation of cytological paraffin bloc
