ETHICS COMMITTEE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SARAJEVO – FACULTY OF MEDICINE

The Ethics Committee of the University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Medicine evaluates and monitors the ethical aspects of scientific and professional research involving human subjects and laboratory animal models (within the framework of registered scientific and professional projects, proposals for master's theses and doctoral dissertations, as well as other professional or scientific works).

The Ethics Committee is an autonomous and independent body of the University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Medicine, responsible for performing tasks within its jurisdiction related to ethical issues, in accordance with Regulation (EU) No. 536/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16 April 2014 on clinical trials on medicinal products for human use (which replaces EU Directive 2001/20/EC), the Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine (Oviedo Convention) with the Additional Protocol on Biomedical Research, the Guidelines for Good Clinical Practice (Official Gazette No. 19/12), the Code of Ethics of the University of Sarajevo dated 27 June 2012, and other normative acts relevant to the field of ethics.
2001/20/EC), Konvencijom o ljudskim pravima i biomedicini (Konvencija iz Ovieda) sa Dodatnim protokolom o biomedicinskim istraživanjima, Smjernicama Dobre Kliničke prakse (Sl. glasnik br 19/12) i Etičkim kodeksom Univerziteta u Sarajevu od 27.06.2012, te drugim normativnim aktima koji se odnose na oblast etike.

When formulating opinions on ethical issues related to biomedical research involving animals (animal models), the Committee adopts principles and applies recommendations of the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS), international principles for biomedical research involving animals, and the resolution of the World Medical Association on the use of animals in biomedical research.

The Committee consists of seven (7) mandatory members, of whom five (5) are from the medical profession and two (2)
from non-medical fields.

In carrying out its duties related to academic, scientific, and research work, the Ethics Committee closely cooperates with other bodies of the Faculty, as well as with public and private entities and healthcare institutions, with the aim of creating and ensuring conditions for the development and promotion of scientific research activities, in accordance with applicable international ethical standards.

The Dean of the University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Medicine appoints the Ethics Committee by official decision.
