The Vivarium at the Faculty of Medicine operates as an integral part of the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology, founded by Academician Pavao Štern in 1948. Since its establishment, the Vivarium has continuously served as a site for experimental research and education in the fields of biomedicine, pharmacology, and toxicology, while ensuring the breeding and care of laboratory animals in accordance with ethical and legal standards.

Over the decades, the Vivarium has hosted numerous scientific research projects, including toxicological and pharmacological testing of drugs, studies on the effects of natural and synthetic substances, as well as investigations into the neuroprotective, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties of drugs using animal models. Significant preclinical research has also been conducted in collaboration with both domestic and international partners, contributing to the development of numerous master’s and doctoral theses.

Today, the Vivarium represents a key research and educational platform of the Faculty, particularly within doctoral and specialist study programs, and continues to support the advancement of modern and experimental pharmacology.
